Isa 45:22 “Look to Me, and be saved,
All you ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
Mt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
Mr 16:15 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
I wish to discuss the importance of missions for the church and the individual Christian.
The purpose of Christ coming and being born in this earth was His mission to redeem humanity. While on earth, He lived for this one mission and He died for that mission.
When He died on the cross, we learn from Peter that He extended this mission beyond the grave to Hell itself.
1Pe 3:19 By whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison
1Pe 4:6 For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
When He arose from the dead, He spent 40 days with His disciples teaching them about the kingdom of God. His last words to His disciples is for them to go to the whole world and preach the gospel message to the whole of humanity.
There are ten compelling reasons why as a church and as believers, we must engage in furtherance of the great commission.
1. If we love Christ we should identify with Him by making His concerns our concerns.
His burdens our burdens, His vision our vision and His mission our mission. We cannot claim to be united with Christ if His business is not our business.
2. Jesus has commanded us
Therefore, engaging in the mission of evangelizing is an act of obedience. To fail to evangelize is to disobey that command of our saviour.
3. Evangelizing the lost should be our compassionate response to the realization that they are lost and hopeless without Christ
Jn.14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Since God so loved the world and gave His only begotten son, we too in love for humanity should give what we can give for their redemption – the gospel.
4. We are saved and have obtained hope of eternal life because other believers preached to us
We have an obligation to pass on what we have received to others who need it. If we have received, we must also give out.
5. We are extensions of God’s love on earth
If we preach, He saves. If we do not preach the gospel, He does not save. God is waiting for us to do our part so that He can do His. Let us understand that we can hinder God by failing to do our part.
6. The church grows through the mission
“And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”- Ac 2:47
By engaging in the mission of Christ, the church grows both quantitatively as well as qualitatively. A church that does not evangelize is a shallow, narrow and disobedient entity.
7. Individuals grow by leaps and bounds when they begin to share their faith
This leaves them strong, confident and diligent in the matters of their faith.
8. Engaging in the mission is a matter of co-working with God
Christ promised that while they are engaged in the mission, “and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”Amen.” – Mt.28:20
We need the joy of partnering with God and the experience of His power as we do it.
9. God promised that we will experience His power while carrying out the mission
“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”- Mr 16:17-18
Therefore if you want to experience God’s power, go out and engage in spreading the gospel. You will be surprised how God will use you.
10. Lastly engaging in the great commission promotes church purity
As a mass of water cannot remain pure while stagnant, the Christian cannot live a really healthy life without giving out. As flowing water remains pure, the gospel commission is the outlet through which the health and purity of the church and individual believers may be perpetuated.
The experience of new testament believers is that God never failed His part in the mission and He will not fail even in our generation. If we will do our part, He will work with us.
And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. – Mr 16:20
