Investment is the commitment of our money and other resources (time, energy or effort) to a project with the expectation of some worthwhile return or profit.
Wealth is created through investment. It is therefore imperative that one who desires to progress in any field must invest his /her resources appropriately and intelligently.
The scripture tells us that the Patriarchs; Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were wealthy. So we know that it is God’s will for His people to prosper. How did they gain their wealth? What was their investment?
There are three areas of investment that I believe these patriarchs committed themselves to.
1. Seeking the blessing of the Lord
Abraham forsook his home, country and possessions to follow the Lord, on the promise of just a blessing. He prospered greatly.
Gen 13:2 “Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.”
Gen 24:35 “The Lord has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.”
Isaac consented to live in the difficult situation in Canaan, on the promise of a blessing.“Then the Lord appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.” (Gen 26:2)
The result of his obedience was that; “Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him. The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;”(Gen 26:12-13)
After Jacob received the blessing from His father Isaac he went to Haran empty handed. When he reached Bethel, he promised God that He would bless him, He would give him a tithe of everything he received. With the blessing, he became very rich; actually richer than his employer.
The bible tells us that; “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.” (Pr 10:22). For your progress, you need the blessing of the Lord; and the means of obtaining this blessing is obedience to God.
Administrate your life and resources in such a way that you will cultivate the blessing of the Lord in your life and pursuits. With the blessing of the Lord on your life, You will never fail.
2. Seeking the Kingdom
God instituted for Israel a system of worship that involved the employment of their material resources in worship through various sacrificial offerings. They were to use their material resources to enhance their spirituality.
Jesus instructed that we should invest our material resources in eternity. “but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Mt 6:20)
Jesus also advised that we use of our resources to seek the kingdom of God and thereby enhance our spirituality. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Mt 6:33) This means that if we give priority to seek the welfare of God’s kingdom, God will see to it that we are provided for in the material sector of life.
We must recognize that our giving towards the kingdom of God will lead to open doors of blessing for our material welfare.
Someone has aptly said that God will not be a debtor to any man. When you take care of God’s business, He will take care of yours.
3. Occupying Your allotted territory
“So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.”(Lu 19:13)
God has promised to bless the work of our hands. God expects his people to work, and that prosperity will come through His blessing on the work of our hands. “that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.” (Dt.14:29)
Work is commanded in the ten commandments. “Six days you shall labor and do all your work” (Ex 20:9) God wants to bring increase in our lives through the work of our hands. It is therefore important that we develop diligence in our work ethic.
