Blessed Are They Who Hunger And Thirst After Righteousness

Blessed Are They Who Hunger And Thirst After Righteousness

There is an unfailing principle with God; that he will avail  His divine provisions only to those who earnestly desire them. So He says in His word; “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you..(Mt 7:7-8)

While God is not a respecter of persons, yet we know that He exercises divine discrimination in favour of those who thirst for Him and His blessings. Therefore it is those who thirst for God and therefore seek Him that are bestowed  with the favour and Grace that God gives.

For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,
And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants,
And My blessing on your offspring;(Isa 44:3)

Ho! Everyone who thirsts,
Come to the waters;
And you who have no money,
Come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without price.(Isa 55:1)

And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.(Re 22:17)

King David was such a person. Consider his confessions in the following verses.

“”As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God? (Ps.42:1-2)

“”O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water. (Ps.63:1)

My soul longs, yes, even faints
For the courts of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.(Ps 84:2)

If you are not thirsty for God, you will not seek God, and consequently, you will not find Him. The spiritual blessings of God are only available to those who are really thirsty, who will seek the Lord earnestly and diligently. These will deny themselves of other pleasures  in order to seek God. Jesus says that such people are blessed.

Here is a promise of God  to His people: “”For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring; (Isa 44:3)

Even in the new testament, the same principle applies. “And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.(Re 22:17)  Being thirsty for God is a major condition for the Lord to bless you.

The tragedy of our times is that many so called Christians do not have much hunger for God and His righteousness. They therefore experience little of His power, presence  and blessings.

People who have done great things for God are people who exhibited great longing thirst for the move of God in their lives. If you read the biographies of  Martin Luther, John Knox, John Wessly, John Bunyan, and countless men of God who have been so blessed that the overflow of their blessings touched multitudes, you will discover  in their groaning a great hunger for the kingdom. They became the princes of the kingdom.

Here are some prayer quotations from people who hungered and thirsted for God’s kingdom  and as a result experienced revival.

John Knox  prayed; “Lord, give me Scotland or I die

St.Patrick prayed; “God, give me souls or give me nothing else.”

Before the revival in Hebrides , the brethren there prayed, “Lord, if you will not use us, please kill us

In the revival in Wales a boy in a prayer meeting was heard crying, “Lord, if you do not move, your reputation is at stake.” Revival broke out that very evening.

Paul was so passionate for God that he said “Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ,” (Phil.3:8)

The  tragedy of our times is  that many  do not have this hunger.  Without this hunger and thirst for righteousness, we are not blessed.  If we want to advance in our Christian life and attain spiritual intimacy with God, this is the condition.  Hunger for God  and His righteousness will cause us to earnestly seek Him  and we will find Him  and obtain His manifold blessings. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you..(Mt 6:33)   The promised blessing for those who hunger and thirst for the things of the kingdom of God is that they shall be filled. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” (Mt 5:6)
