Blessed Are The Meek

Blessed Are The Meek

Mt 5:5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.

Who are the meek? The dictionary defines meek as being “humble in spirit or manner, suggesting retiring mildness or even cowed submissiveness.”Other synonyms used to describe meekness are tame, docile, compliant.

In other words, Jesus says that blessed are the humble in spirit.  This is not a new message. It resonates through out the scripture in both the old and the new testament.

God Delights In Humble People

The old testament writings in Psalms and prophets indicate that God delights in humble people. Consider the following verses:-

Job 22:29 When they cast you down, and you say, ‘Exaltation will come!
Then He will save the humble person.

Ps 9:12 When He avenges blood, He remembers them;
He does not forget the cry of the humble.

Ps 10:12  “Arise, O Lord!
O God, lift up Your hand!
Do not forget the humble.

Ps 10:17  Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble;
You will prepare their heart;
You will cause Your ear to hear

Isa 57:15 For thus says the High and Lofty One
Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
With him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
To revive the spirit of the humble,
And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Even in the new testament, the apostles emphasized about God’s preference for humble people.

Jas 4:6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble”

1Pe 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”

God Deliberately Humbles Those He Loves

In Deuteronomy 8:2 and 16, God specifically said that the reason He took the Children of Israel through the desert was to humble them.

De 8:3So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.

Both Joseph and Moses, whom God would use greatly were also greatly humbled before they could take up their God assigned leadership roles. But when they reached their bottom, God then raised them to the top.

So was Job. After he had persevered through a deeply humbling test, God not only restored him, but doubled his fortunes.

Job 22:29When they cast you down, and you say, ‘Exaltation will come!
Then He will save the humble person.”

The same can be said about King David. After he was anointed to be king of Israel, he went through a really miserable time being hunted like an animal by king Saul who wanted to kill him. He however passed the test of humility and God himself removed Saul from the throne using the Philistines as His instrument and installed David as the overall king of Israel.

We Are Exorted To Humble Ourselves

Since humility is so important in God’s sight, we are exorted numerous times in the scriptures that we should humble ourselves.

2Ch 7:14if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Pr 29:23  A man’s pride will bring him low,
But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

Jer 13:18  “Say to the king and to the queen mother,
“Humble yourselves;
Sit down,
For your rule shall collapse, the crown of your glory.”

Mt 18:4  Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven

Jas 4:10  “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

1Pet.5:6.Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time

Value Of Humility

God loves meekness and has made many promises to the humble. He is close to them and delights to do them good.

Isa 57:15 For thus says the High and Lofty One
Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
With him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
To revive the spirit of the humble,
And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Ps 10:17 Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble;
You will prepare their heart;
You will cause Your ear to hear,

Ps 9:12 When He avenges blood, He remembers them;
He does not forget the cry of the humble

Job 22:29 When they cast you down, and you say, ‘Exaltation will come!
Then He will save the humble person.

Ps 22:26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
Let your heart live forever!

Ps 25:9 The humble He guides in justice,
And the humble He teaches His way.

Ps 76:9 When God arose to judgment,
To deliver all the oppressed of the earth.

Ps 147:6 The Lord lifts up the humble;
He casts the wicked down to the ground.

Ps 149:4 For the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the humble with salvation

God Uses Humble People To Carry Out His Purposes

God uses people who are meek and lowly. That is why God chooses unlikely persons to use as His instruments.

1Co 1:27-28  But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty

Meek people will not take the glory and meek people are loyal to the master and therefore reliable. Moreover, the meek are victorious because they will never fight for themselves, but will wait on God to fight for them. They cannot derail God’s process.

Nu 12:3 Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.

Mt 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Mt 21:5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your King is coming to you,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

Finally, there is a promise for the meek that they shall inherit the earth. They have a future guaranteed by God himself and Jesus calls the blessed.

I trust you and I will cultivate an attitude of meekness

Ps 37:11 But the meek shall inherit the earth,
And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
